The word "happy" has its roots in the old Norse word happ, meaning chance or luck: the word "hapless" means unfortunate or luckless and conversely "happiness" is taken to mean as an abundance of luck. Our Declaration of Independence staked out the pursuit of happiness as one of the three unalienable rights of humans and in the 19th century, hundreds of Americans filed lawsuits accusing the Government and fellow citizens of impeding their sacred right to happiness. However when an unhappy American complained to Benjamin Franklin about this unfulfilled promise, Franklin replied that the (Declaration of Independence) " only gives you the right to pursue happiness - however you have to catch it yourself! "

Until very recently, the field of psychology rested almost entirely on the treatment of manifested mental problems, with no mention of mental health promotion. This is now changing and increasingly psychological research is focused on finding out what makes a person happy and how all of us can achieve this goal. |
