The word "happy" has its roots in the old Norse word happmeaning chance or luck: the word "hapless" means unfortunate or luckless and conversely "happiness" is taken to mean as an abundance of luck. The American Declaration of Independence staked out the pursuit of happiness as one of the three unalienable rights of humans and in the 19th century. Thereafter hundreds of Americans filed lawsuits accusing the Government and fellow citizens of impeding their sacred right to happiness. However when an unhappy  American complained to Benjamin Franklin about this unfulfilled promise, Franklin replied that the (Declaration of Independence) " only gives you the right to pursue happiness - however you have to catch it yourself! "
